Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb (author image below) is centered around the character of Fitz, a young boy who is bastard to a member of the royal family in Buckkeep Castle. Endowed with dormant unusual abilities, Fitz becomes apprentice to a Master Assassin, with the sworn duty to protect the royalty from harm.
Fitz is "Skilled" and is able to repel enemies with his mind, see faraway places through his mind's eye and share strong bonds with certain creatures. His abilities are discovered while working in the stables for the king's man, Burrich. This is the first book the author penned under the pseudonym Robin Hobb and was first published in 1995. Interestingly, the original title of the book was Chivalry's Bastard. Assassin's Apprentice is the first book in the Farseer Trilogy.
